Swimwear Style Changes Over the Years

Fashion has managed to sneak into our lives, not only when we are working or partying but also when we are out at a beach, bathing under the sun. Like other clothing items, swimsuits too have donned various avatars during the yesteryears and have evolved to become much stylish and sexier. While some people support the changes the swimsuits have gone through, some oppose it but it remains a matter of fact that the swimsuits have changed for good and the women today feel much more comfortable and confident with these swimsuits on.

Starting from 1880s till early 1900s, swimsuits were completely the opposite of what they are today; revealing. The concept behind the swimsuits of that era was to reveal less and cover more. Women did not like donning much of a skin show to steer clear of creating wrong impressions in other’s minds. The modest swimsuits in this era left little to be exposed and looked like proper dresses.

The fashion took a turn around two decades later and swimsuits changed to become a bit exposing. Women got rid of the long and ill-fitted skirts and switched to body hugging tank suits. According to a city law in the 1920s, the women could not wear swimsuits that were more than 6 inches over their knees. The next decade, around 1930s saw the coming of one piece backless swimming costumes that redefined the whole concept of swimsuits and changed people’s perspectives as well. This was the time when the swimwear then, somehow started resembling the swimwear today. After the backless version came the bathing suits with halter tops in the 1940’s. Another much popular style was the corset. It was during this decade that Jacques Heim and Louis Reard introduced women to the world of bikinis.

Time went by and gave rise to more fashionable one piece suits in the 1950’s. While some styles were sophisticated, some were good enough for showing off more skin. The word ‘sexy’ got a whole new meaning for the women who enjoyed bathing with these stylish swimsuits. As time passed and next decade came in, women switched to swimsuits that revealed more than what they concealed. The best style for this decade was the bikini till the high-waisted bottoms made their way into the fashion industry. Designers and brands started experimenting with unique and revealing styles to enhance the way women wore swimsuits.

1980’s and 90s continued more or less similar styles and incorporated bikini tops that had adjustable straps. 2000s was the time when swimsuits got their present avatar and became something that’s very close to a woman’s heart. One piece and bikini swimsuits in 2000s left nothing to the onlookers’ imagination and depicted the ultimate exposure. The trends are changing faster than what our thoughts and the modern day women are following it with the hope of looking drop dead gorgeous all the time.
